The awesome Samsung Tab S7 for Android enthusiasts

So, I ve been using the Samsung Tab S7 for nearly 6 months now and I really like it. The display and build quality exceeded my expectations. The software experience is good but will go in detail later in the blog post. Can't say enough good things about this tablet but more on that as we go on.

I usually steer clear of premium tablets but wanted something that worked well in the Android sphere. There is no Google offering so I tried a few before settling on the Tab S7. First there was the Onn/Walmart tablet. Super cheap and man did it look and perform that way. Then there were a couple of Lenovo tablets but I ran into an issue with both where certain streaming apps did not work properly. A black screen would play instead of video.

From there, I broaden my Android tablet search with my willingness to spend more money. Next tablet I tried was the Samsung S6 Lite and found this tablet to meet most of my needs. The performance was a little underwhelming but was good with it overall. However, using the Tab S6 Lite over time only made me want something better. If that was Samsung’s goal I guessed they achieved it with me in this case.

Enter the Tab S7. When I first got the tablet in I knew this was it for me. The design with the flat sides and the thin bezel stood out to me. I must have missed this during my research but discovered the side button is equipped with a fingerprint scanner. Definitely a plus in my book. I also like that Samsung fits an 11inch screen in such a compact body. I feel like an 11inch tablet should be so much bigger but it's not. Awesome job Samsung!

What I was looking for in a tablet

Design - I wanted a modern-looking Android tablet with slim bezels and the Tab S7 matches my needs perfectly in this area.

Display - I wasn't looking for an OLED screen but Samsung’s offering here is a good one. LTPS TFT tech on the display that's 500 nits at 120Hz. Nice and bright screen that can be seen clearly at any angle. No complaints here.

Features - I wanted a tablet that came with a pen or pencil and fortunately the Tab S7 does. I like how you can import PDFs and mark them up with little to no effort. The S-Pen is pretty intuitive. You can draw or doodle as a pro or just for fun.

Apps - I use my tablet as a consumption device and the Tab S7 does not disappoint. App selection is good when it comes to streaming services such as HBO Max and Netflix. Apps work as intended and are designed well enough. There are some apps that are just blown up phone apps, however, the apps I use scale to the tablet well and just work.

Processor - You get the latest from Qualcomm in 2020. The 865+. I don't feel like I’m ever maxing it out and that's a good thing.

Speakers - Gets plenty loud with the quad-speaker setup and sounds really good. Tuned by AKG with Dolby Atmos support. Checks the box for sure.

Software - You have Android 11 with Samsung’s software on top which is mostly fine. I wish Samsung did not duplicate apps like Calendar or Contacts. I just hide them in a folder and never look at them again. Except for Samsung Notes which is an excellent app. Samsung's spin on Android is good and much better than before. Not as heavy and seem to focus on the user experience and software stability. Multi-tasking is okay and works reliably. PIP is there and works well. I'm sure there are others but that's all I really use on a consistent basis. You also get 3 to 4 years of updates and monthly security patches. All in all a solid bid from Samsung.

Other features

Final thoughts

There’s not much else left to say. Samsung made a really good tablet and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a premium Android device. It's sleek, modern, and powerful. The Samsung Tab S7 is the tablet you want you just don't know it yet.

Are we set to see new entry level Pixel Buds at Google I/O?

I'm not one to start a Google rumor but I have to do it this time. Looking at the Google Store website this evening I noticed that the Pixel Buds A series are all but out of stock except for the Sea color way. This lines up perfectly with Google I/O being just around the corner. The Pixel Buds A are coming up on their four year anniversary in June so a refresh is definitely needed.  I'm actually hoping Google gets rid of the A series line and make a slightly more premium version with features similar to the Pixel Buds Pro 2s. Of course Google will save some features just for the pros, however, they can add multi point and better battery life just to name a couple of much needed upgrades. I guess we will have to wait and see what Google's plans really are.

YT Music is my new go to Podcast player | The case to make it your podcast app

Believe it or not but YouTube Music did not always have podcasts. As a matter of fact YT Music was not the home for music for Google. That was once Google Play Music but in December of 2020 YT Music took over the music duties for the company. In 2023 YT Music absorbed podcasts from Google Podcasts which brings us to where we are now. For the sake of time I am only going to mention the podcast function within the app/service. What does YouTube Music offer? YT Music is a real basic podcast player that has got the essentials right. The service offers podcasts that are available on the service and the option to add podcasts via an RSS feed. Podcasts can also be downloaded, playback speed can be adjusted, audio/video switching (YT Music podcasts only), sleep timer, trim silence (new), and background play without the need for a YT Music subscription.  There is also library support to manage your collection of podcasts, a dedicated podcast section and search and recommendation for podcast...

I attended a Pixel Superfans event at the new Google Store in Santa Monica, CA

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend a Pixel Superfans event at the new Google Store in Santa Monica. It was a soft launch of the store and a good way to meet like minded people. The staff were very nice and helpful. While I was at the store I was able to finally check out the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and wow that device is extremely impressive. Outside of that, I was able to look around the store and check out other Google products which there are quite a bit to see. I'm looking forward to my next visit to the new Google Store. Take a look at the pictures below including one of some swag I got from Google at the event.
