The release of the newly announced Googlebook cannot come fast enough for me. I am in the market for a new laptop and have my sights set on a Googlebook with the hope Google is making one. So far there are about five laptop manufacturers that are slated to be producing and releasing one this calendar year. Although, details are sparse surrounding the Googlebook I've seen just enough to know that I want this device to be a part of my tech ecosystem.
My current tech ecosystem
Admittedly, I've been holding out for a minute to get a new laptop. Fortunately, my current device is still meeting my needs but barely. Right now, I am rocking a Pixelbook Go from 2019 and using a Pixel 10 Pro with a Pixel Tablet. I'm fine with this setup but my needs for more capable and powerful computing is getting harder to ignore. My Pixelbook Go does not seem as connected to my other devices as I would like which would explain why I don't use it as much. ChromeOS has not progressed much over the last year or two to keep up with what's been happening on Android.
What I'm looking forward to with Googlebook
I am a huge fan of Gemini and believe that most of what users will be using computers for in the future is going to center around AI. From what I have seen so far, Gemini is going to be that bridge to help us get more done quickly. There was a demo where Google took an image from Google Photos by just right clicking on it and asked Gemini to create a poster. The use case may vary but having the ability to do something like that without opening multiple windows is something I am looking forward to.
There is also the ability to have desktop app icons and folders that were always missing on ChromeOS. Widgets will be available too with the ability to create one from scratch. Then there is the ecosystem play with an Android phone connecting to a Googlebook seamlessly. One can even cast apps from an Android phone without needing to install it. The files feature seems pretty cool as well where your Android phone files are accessible from the Files app on Googlebook. These are the few features we are aware of but I'm sure Google has a whole lot more to show.
The Googlebook hardware
If you thought Google was not as forthcoming on the software front, it is more of a mystery on the hardware side of things. Judging by what Google shared in a video and on the Googlebook website we can decipher some core hardware features to expect. One being the Glow Bar from the Chromebook Pixel days of yesteryear, an Everything button as a G logo, fingerprint reader and port options for connectivity. Google says Googlebook will come with high quality materials and powerful performance so we'll have to wait to see what all they have planned.
Final thoughts on Googlebook
I'm confident that Google can make a beautiful and capable operating system especially with Android and Gemini being the main pillars. Where I tend to worry just a bit is with pricing for these devices. If only Google can get their partners to make these devices premium yet affordable other operating systems may have even more competition on their hands. With software being so important and if Google can deliver on that front, I can see a world where all of my devices run Android.
