Pixel 5a renders have me excited for the Pixel 6

As a watcher of Google and a fan of the Pixel lineup of phones, I must say that the leaked render of the Pixel 5a has me excited for the Pixel 6. With phones set to debut later this year, I tend to believe that the renders are accurate. It seems that Google finalizes their new phones in the 1st quarter of the year based on past leaks and rumors.

So, what do we have?

Not much we can tell from a picture beside the obvious. Design cues are definitely similar to the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 from 2020. And I'm cool with that! Google typically introduces a new design with each iteration of Pixel phones but I like that we are getting some consistency. The design of a phone does not need to change every year, in my opinion. Other than a similar design the other apparent change we can see is the camera setup and this is why I’m excited for the Pixel 6.

So, why am I excited about a dual-camera setup?

To put it simply, we should see a triple-lens setup for the Pixel 6. If last year is any indication of what we may see this year a triple-lens setup is a differentiating feature from the 5a. Although I've been content with the camera setups Google has produced over the years this would be the first with three lenses and I would like to see what they can do. Also, having the flexibility of having dedicated cameras for wide-angle shots to using the telephoto for those long-distance shots will make the camera experience that much better. Super-res zoom does compensate for not having a telephoto lens but having the hardware built-in with the software will make those pictures even better.

Rumored design and specs

Unibody (likely plastic made) rear panel

156.2 x 73.2 x 8.8mm (9.4mm with the rear camera bump)

Flat 6.2" OLED FHD+ display

Thin bezels and forehead but quite a large chin

Dual lens camera setup + unknown sensor (likely PDAF)

Single punch hole selfie camera located on top left corner

3.5 mm headphone jack

Rear fingerprint sensor

Stereo speakers

Final thoughts

It seems that Google has quite the year planned. The leaked render did not provide any real insight as to what we can expect this year however it tells me that the Pixel team is listening. A bigger display and dual cameras are what is rumored for this device and those are the two biggest complaints I remember hearing last year. Then that leaves the Pixel 6. I really don't see Google keeping the cameras the same for the A-line as the 6 this year. Could they? Nah. We’ll see soon enough. Let me know what you think in the comments.

YT Music is my new go to Podcast player | The case to make it your podcast app

Believe it or not but YouTube Music did not always have podcasts. As a matter of fact YT Music was not the home for music for Google. That was once Google Play Music but in December of 2020 YT Music took over the music duties for the company. In 2023 YT Music absorbed podcasts from Google Podcasts which brings us to where we are now. For the sake of time I am only going to mention the podcast function within the app/service. What does YouTube Music offer? YT Music is a real basic podcast player that has got the essentials right. The service offers podcasts that are available on the service and the option to add podcasts via an RSS feed. Podcasts can also be downloaded, playback speed can be adjusted, audio/video switching (YT Music podcasts only), sleep timer, trim silence (new), and background play without the need for a YT Music subscription.  There is also library support to manage your collection of podcasts, a dedicated podcast section and search and recommendation for podcast...

Are we set to see new entry level Pixel Buds at Google I/O?

I'm not one to start a Google rumor but I have to do it this time. Looking at the Google Store website this evening I noticed that the Pixel Buds A series are all but out of stock except for the Sea color way. This lines up perfectly with Google I/O being just around the corner. The Pixel Buds A are coming up on their four year anniversary in June so a refresh is definitely needed.  I'm actually hoping Google gets rid of the A series line and make a slightly more premium version with features similar to the Pixel Buds Pro 2s. Of course Google will save some features just for the pros, however, they can add multi point and better battery life just to name a couple of much needed upgrades. I guess we will have to wait and see what Google's plans really are.

I attended a Pixel Superfans event at the new Google Store in Santa Monica, CA

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend a Pixel Superfans event at the new Google Store in Santa Monica. It was a soft launch of the store and a good way to meet like minded people. The staff were very nice and helpful. While I was at the store I was able to finally check out the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and wow that device is extremely impressive. Outside of that, I was able to look around the store and check out other Google products which there are quite a bit to see. I'm looking forward to my next visit to the new Google Store. Take a look at the pictures below including one of some swag I got from Google at the event.
